New graphics card

Post by Ari on August 27th 2011, 6:01 pm

So this is the piece of junk I have now.

http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-dx4300-15e/4507-3118_7-33964721.html

I opened it up today to clean out the absurd amount of dust inside (how does it all get in there anyway), and it appears that I have a PCI-E x16 slot available.

Now given the size of my computer, would a new GPU fit inside the case? I've no idea how big graphics cards are myself because I've only seen them in picture.

Budget still $20?

Also check how much power you have.

Just about any standard card will fit inside a mid-tower

We will need to know your PSU though

It's 300w, but that's obviously going to be upgraded.

Would it be possible to replace the DDR2 RAM in my computer to DDR3 in the future?

In order to upgrade from DDR2 to DDR3, you'd be looking at upgrading your motherboard, which in turn would result in you having to upgrade your processor as well.

Do you have any sort of budget in place? If you're looking at going with a new graphics card, PSU, and the thought that you'd like to upgrade RAM, I'd suggest you save up your money and build yourself a new desktop.

New desktops can be built at very reasonable prices now, so I'd take that into consideration.

Well the processor can probably be used on the new board too. You just need one that is AM2/AM3 compatible, although that would mean it isn't going to work with any AM3+ processor, if I remember right.

AM3 still isn't a dead upgrade path so it is viable to do that

And no, AM3 processor's won't work in an AM3+ mobo

make sure the slot beside the pci-e slot is also free, because most cards these days have dual-slot heatsinks.

AMD is just more bang for the buck, but Intel is always the leader in performance.

Most other games aside from CA actually manage their resources fairly well, and it isn't strenuous to record.
I record BC2 at like 10 lower fps than I play at.
